“Love one another and you will be happy. It’s as simple and as difficult as that.” – Michael Leunig
Isn’t it simple? To love someone? Your own family, cousins, uncles and aunts who have known you from the start, seen you even before you were conscious of the concept of “you”?
Not really. Being with people is like looking into a mirror. My reflection is in their eyes, on their faces, in their reactions.
I love my family in general but I closed down in front of them. I didn’t want to grow estranged and I’ve always been afraid that I would – because I always thought that the only thing that connected us was the family bond.
Until I was ready to see behind the wall of my fear and realised that I was so focused on our differences that I didn’t see their unique beauty. I was so jealous of their social achievements that I didn’t realise how my success intimidated them.
When I included the goal “Visit my cousins” on my Courage List, the deep desire wasn’t only a one-off event but a continuous connection. And this weekend was a good start. Short visits to keep it sweet, giving presents to keep it purpose and having mum there to keep me shielded.
What will the future bring I can’t say but I will definitely make more of an effort to continue down on the road of active family relations. (Here are some good tips from the business world that will help.)
If you’re an introvert, do you find it hard to keep in touch with your family?
